Shaping Fair AI: AI4Gov Presents the Holistic Regulatory Framework at EDI 2025

From July 7–9, 2025, AI4Gov took part in the 18th Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) International Conference, held in Athens and hosted by the American College of Greece. This year’s theme — “AI and Diversity in a Datafied World of Work: Will the Future of Work Be Inclusive?” — sparked global dialogue among researchers from all continents, broadening the conversation beyond a Western lens.

As part of the conference programme, AI4Gov hosted a dedicated stream titled “Ethical Algorithmic Decision Making: Leave No One Behind,” chaired by Prof. Theodoros Chadjipadelis from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

With governments increasingly turning to Algorithmic Decision Systems (ADS) to deliver public services and inform policy, the session tackled some of today’s most critical questions:

🔹 How can we ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in automated decision-making?
🔹 What safeguards can prevent bias, discrimination, and loss of human oversight?

A key highlight was the presentation of the Holistic Regulatory Framework (HRF)—AI4Gov’s core toolkit for ethical and democratic AI. Danai Kyrkou (ViLabs) presented the co-authored abstract “Holistic Regulatory Framework: AI4Gov’s toolkit for ethical and democratic AI”, developed by a multidisciplinary team from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Ioannina, and ViLabs.

The paper introduces the HRF’s structure and methodology, including a self-assessment tool that supports developers and public authorities in aligning AI technologies with democratic values and ethical principles.
